Twenty hotels this far apart have little in common on paper. What they share is a reason to exist in the building they occupy: a church that kept its nave, a warehouse row that kept its iron front, a shell moulded for one night of sleep, a hall of snow that will be water by May. We describe the building first, then the night inside it, and we stop there.
